Our history

Exel was founded in 1960 by three chemists, initially specializing in the production of electric detonator caps, hence the name Explosive Electrics. During the early years, the employees’ involvement in competitive pistol shooting inspired the development of Silenta hearing protectors, which quickly became a success in both sports and industrial markets. Exel became the first and leading manufacturer of hearing protectors in Europe, gaining valuable expertise in plastics manufacturing, particularly in injection molding.
Exel entered the composites field in 1973 with fiberglass ski poles, followed by the world’s first carbon fiber ski poles, patented and developed in 1974. These poles became an immediate success after their debut at the 1976 Innsbruck/Seefeld Winter Olympics. By the end of the decade, Exel was producing 1.5 million pairs of ski poles annually, capturing 50% of the global market.
Today, Exel is the world’s largest pultruder, serving industries ranging from infrastructure and energy to transportation and telecommunications.
